Minjingu Mines and Fertilizer Limited (MMFL) mines phosphate rocks, located 106 kms along the Arusha-Dodoma road, in Babati district, Manyara region was established in April, 2001. MMFL has been transforming the nation’s agriculture by producing 150,000 metric tons of high-quality natural phosphate fertilisers annually. With a dedicated workforce of more than 1,700 Tanzanians, the company supplies fertilisers to farming communities across East Africa
WHAT WE DO
1. Phosphate Mining
MMFL extract the phosphate rock conventional open-pit mining techniques, including excavators and haul trucks. The ore undergoes crushing and drying at an on-site beneficiation plant. This process separates phosphate from impurities, resulting in a powdered “beneficiated” rock phosphate. The company extracts approximately 165,000 tons of phosphate processed to produce 150,000 tons of compound fertilizers annually. These fertilisers are distributed to over 1,000,000 farmers through a network of 300 Minjingu agro dealers across 102 districts. Minjingu Mines and Fertiliser Limited operates a reliable fleet of branded trucks dedicated to delivering fertilisers directly to agro-dealers across Tanzania. These trucks ensure timely distribution, maintaining product quality and availability in every region, so farmers receive Minjingu fertilisers when and where they need them most.
2. Soil Testing
Soil testing is essential before producing Minjingu Phosphate Fertilisers as it helps determine the specific nutrient needs and deficiencies in different soil types. This ensures the fertiliser formulations are tailored to meet crop and regional soil requirements, leading to more effective results. By aligning fertilizer composition with actual soil conditions, MMFL enhances crop productivity, avoids nutrient wastage, and promotes sustainable soil health.
3. Granulation And Blending
The powdered phosphate can be used directly as a slow and fast release fertiliser. However, to improve ease of use and reduce wind dispersion, Minjingu has implemented the commercial scale granulation of rock phosphate, without chemical binders, transforming powder into 1–4 mm granules. Granulated phosphate is further processed in a blending plant, where it is combined with additional macro and micronutrients to produce crop specific fertilisers tailored to East African soils.
4. Education And Information
One of the key roles of Minjingu Mines and Fertiliser Limited is to educate and to inform farmers and stakeholders about its fertilisers, through a combination of targeted outreach programs include:
We follow a farming approach rooted in purity, care, and long-term sustainability. By using natural methods, protecting soil health, and avoiding harmful chemicals.
To manufacture high quality Fertilizers which are crop and geographic area specific so that farmers achieve maximum crop yields.
To be the prominent producer and preferred supplier of all basic Fertilizers in Tanzania and the wider East African region by using using the local Phosphate resource available which is of Biogenic and ideal for applications on the acidic soils of East Africa.

Minjingu fertilizers are formulated with essential nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and calcium that improve soil fertility, enhance nutrient uptake, and support strong crop growth. This results in healthier plants and higher yields across different crops.
The best fertilizer for maize farming in Tanzania includes phosphate fertilizers like Minjingu Organic Hyper Phosphate (MOHP) for planting, combined with nitrogen-based top-dressing fertilizers. This combination supports root development, plant growth, and increased yields.
Phosphate fertilizers improve soil fertility by increasing phosphorus levels, enhancing root development, and improving nutrient availability. They also help reduce soil acidity and support long-term soil health, making them ideal for sustainable farming.
Yes, Minjingu fertilizers are designed for different crops including maize, coffee, tea, cotton, and cereals. Crop-specific fertilizers such as Coffee Plus, Golden Chai, and White Diamond Pamba provide balanced nutrition tailored to each crop’s needs.
For best results, apply phosphate fertilizers at planting to support root development, followed by top-dressing fertilizers during crop growth. Always follow recommended application rates and consider soil testing to maximize effectiveness
